KAYAKING THROUGH MANGROVES

Costa Rica Cost Of Living Update:            Four Hour Kayak Tour-$35/person

Nature doesn’t want me here.

A family of white face monkeys hang off the elevated roots and bear their teeth.  The White Ibis birds dart over my head, chasing me away as one would an uninvited guest.

I silently glide across the water when I notice two suspicious eyes on the surface.  It continues to stare before slowly sinking back into the murkiness. Could it be a crocodile, one that may have been watching me this whole time? All the more reason to be nervous when my husband almost flips the kayak.

Mangroves make you feel alone and vulnerable;  their inhabitants are the ones  deciding your fate.

I leave without looking back and remind my husband to stop rocking the boat.

[…] be. And my husband couldn’t stop pointing out how I didn’t help him load either of the kayaks into the back of our car.  Or go with him to buy them in the first place. Or hose the salty water […]

This was one of the best trips I did. Mangroves are an awesome place to see a lot of wildlife, especially birds.

Thanks, I guess I’ll have to take the long drive down there, one of these days. I usually just kayak around the central pacific coast.

Hey where was this at? I would love to take my kayak there. Looks like great scenery

That was in Puerto Jimenez. But you can find these mangroves in many places in Costa Rica. There are so many places to kayak, it might be the perfect country who loves to get out on the water.

Reminds me of an episode of Man vs Wild. He was in the mangroves, he looked pretty miserable.

It felt a lot like man vs wild. So still and quiet, you just knew the animals were planning something. The monkeys were pretty crazy, they climbed all the way down onto the mangrove roots to howl at us to go away. I’m surprised they got so close, but then again, I am no match for 50 monkeys.

Kudos to you for even trying this! As adventuresome as I think I am, I don’t know that I could have made that trip. Much rather experience the fear vicariously through you!

It seemed like it would be a nice trip to do. I always start each excurison like I am expecting Julie from the Love Boat to offer me a complimentary pina colada. You can’t expect that here. Pure…wild…no swim up bar….kinda of experience.
