BABY HAWK ON THE HUNT

Costa Rica Cost of Living:  Sky Satellite Television with many English speaking programs- $35/month

For the past few days we noticed a baby hawk swooping across the field in front of our house. Although a little cross eyed and with wings too big for his body, he is slowly learning how to fly.  He awkwardly glides from tree to tree and occasionally dives into the grass for the mouse that always seems to get away. It will just be a matter of time until he is successful.

There is no better way to start my morning then with a cup of coffee watching my new flying friend.  Soon he will leave but I will remember him like he is today, cross eyed and clumsy, hunting for that ever elusive mouse.

NICARAGUAN INVASION BASED ON FAULTY GOOGLE MAP

Costa Rica Cost of Living Update:  Average  cost of bribing Nicaraguan border official to let car into their country- $5

It’s not uncommon to hear about a country invading another. But Nicaragua based their decision on a Google map which makes me question President Ortega’s military resources. The video explains why Tico’s just roll their eyes when I ask them about this latest Nicaraguan temper tantrum.

Google responds to their involvement in this operation by issuing a public announcement, “Google maps are of very high quality and Google works constantly to improve and update existing information, by no means should they be used as a reference to decide military actions between two countries.”

Who knew an iPhone application could cause so many problems?

WHAT’S UP DOC?

Costa Rica Cost Of Living Update: 2.2 pounds of carrots (1 kilogram)- 55 cents

Produce is super cheap here.  Every town has a big farmer’s market open on Friday or Saturday.  Hundreds of vendors line up with their freshest produce at ridiculously low prices.  You can get also get your chicken, eggs, and if necessary, a pair of underwear all in the same place.  We usually leave with a week worth of produce for twenty dollars.  If you add the chicken and eggs,  it’s more like twenty five dollars.  It’s a great way to eat healthy and not spend a lot of money.

And with a kilogram of carrots costing 50 cents, you can be sure I’ll be eating a lot of those.  It’s a lot cheaper than a bag of Oreo’s.

I DIDN’T KNOW FISHER PRICE MADE CELL PHONES

Costa Rica Cost Of Living Update: Cell Phone Bill  $7/month

I like to brag about my cell phone bill since I paid ten times that while living in the states.  But what I don’t like to tell people is that the cell phone cost us $300. What made this purchase all the more worse is that it looks like a refurbished Fisher Price phone my two year old niece might play with.  Even Barbie and Ken sport better models.

Within three months all the “extra” features stopped working: calculator, alarm clock, and solitaire game.  I was left with a phone that could only make calls. (What is this…1995?).  We thought this phone would only last six months but it’s been around for three years. No matter what we do, the damn thing just won’t break.

Now the Central American Free Trade Agreement has passed and competition for cell plans has been introduced to Costa Rica.  Maybe I’ll get a new one that texts or have apps I can download.  Or maybe I’ll just stick with mine and forget about all the high falutin features. 1995 was a great year for me, do I really need more?

RAINFOREST FRESH LAUNDRY

Costa Rica Cost Of Living Update: Water Bill  $4 /month

Living in a cloud forest has its surprises. The high rainforest humidity combined with the strong sunshine creates an effect like a smoke machine. This also occurs when I get out of the shower making me look like the Human Torch from the Fantastic Four.  It’s fun to feel like a superhero.
